First, water should not be a substitute to milk. When babies drink more water, they fill up and may give problems during their feeds. Secondly, bottlefed and breastfed babies get all their fluids from their milk feeds alone if they exclusively on milk diet (below 4-6 months). You do not have to give water separately. You may wish to give your baby water on a warm day or sips of water from a cup (not a bottle) to an older infant. However once babies are on solid foods, they can handle water better.
