Toys and Play (5 months old baby)

Toys and Play

Mirror, mirror..

Now is the time to get baby a crib mirror if she hasn't got one already. Choose one made from unbreakable material. It should be about 6 inches across and one in which baby can see herself clearly. Attach the mirror to the outside of the crib so she can see it through the bars. If you have a full length mirror in the hall or bedroom let her gaze into that.

Tickle Games:

These are lots of fun. Tickle game involves identifying different parts of baby's body. Begin by softly touching parts of her body according to the rhyme. Trace circles on her tummy at the end.

"where are baby's fingers?
Where are baby's toes?
Where, oh where, oh where..
Is my baby's nose?"

You can change the parts that you identify in the song to ears, chin, forehead, hands, feet, and tummy. The words don't have to rhyme; name whatever comes to mind. Repeat it few times if baby is enjoying the game.

Imitate Baby Sounds:

To encourage baby's efforts at talking, imitate the sounds she makes when she babbles. Hold her facing you on your lap; let her babble and when she pauses, repeat the syllables she just made such as 'da-da-da'. She will probably listen closely. Smile and hug her if she repeats your sounds. Continue the game even if she doesn't imitate you; you are helping her learn through imitation, one important way she will master language.

Encourage Baby to Move:

Now is the right time to begin encouraging baby to practice crawling skills. Place baby on the floor with a few toys he likes just out of his reach. Let him choose which toy he wants to play with, then encourage him to move toward it to get it. In addition to encouraging baby's movements, you will also giving him opportunity to make simple choices
