What are probiotics and prebiotics and why are they important for my baby?


Some baby foods and most formula milk contain probiotics which are important for baby's gut to fight off unhealthy bacteria and viruses. The 'flora' or good bacteria line the gut and protect your baby against harmful bacteria. Probiotics can also be found naturally in live yogurt. Prebiotics on the other hand in the natural form include non-digestible food ingredients such as garlic, asparagus, leeks, onions etc which works to promote the growth of baby's own flora in her gut. Prebiotics in natural food forms are not usually fed to babies and so will need to be added to baby’s formula, cereals and other baby food. Both probiotics and prebiotics are basically healthy strains of bacteria which when introduced to your baby's diet will colonize the gut to fight off unhealthy bacteria and other 'invaders' and keep your baby healthy.
