My ten month old daughter has just started taking her first steps. Should she start wearing shoes, what kind of shoes should I be looking for?
Your baby is walking but shoes should not become a concern so soon. Babies feet grow healthy and strong when they are left bare. Young children especially should be allowed to move around bare-footed so that their feet develop flexibility and strength. Don't get persuaded by shoe manufacturers into buying fancy foot wear with built in arch support for a new walker. They are useful for mature walkers when your child is older but not at this stage. When a young child shows signs of walking, let her learn to grip with her toes and build important muscles in the arch which can be achieved by walking without shoes. Babies and young children have fleshy plump feet and so the curve is not obvious. But the arches are very much there so let her walk shoe-less.
Of course you will be concerned about those unwanted accidents at home which can cause injury to your baby or when the weather is less than favourable meaning chilly, then cloth booties with non-skid soles is something your baby can wear. Inexpensive canvas sneakers are something you can consider when your baby is outside. When you do buy her footwear, there is little sense in investing in expensive shoes for a new walker. Since style becomes a priority much later, it is better to think 'value and not brand' when buying baby shoes - good fit, safety and comfort should top your list.
