I find my skin becoming darker with time, is this a natural part of pregnancy?

A good 90% of pregnant women go through some form of skin pigmentation during their pregnancies. The skin takes on a darker tone wherever the skin has color, especially the nipples or areola (area around the nipple), the perineum and the line that forms specifically during pregnancy called the linea nigra. Skin cells in moles and freckles also darken due to the same hormone, MSH (melanocyte-stimulating hormone), which stimulates the production of the pigment melanin in your skin. This happens because these areas are concentrated with melanocytes, which over-produces melanin. Some women will also notice patches of dark skin on their inner thighs, underarms and wherever the skin appears to be more layered. The stains could be due to skin-to-skin friction so it helps to keep your skin clean and dry (perspiration-free) and avoid tight fitting clothes to reduce the possibility of friction.
