What are Braxton Hicks contractions and why do they occur?

Braxton Hicks contractions are sometimes referred to as 'rehearsal contractions' and are precursors to the real thing. They aid in the flow of oxygen to your baby. They are painless and at the most uncomfortable. Quite different from actual contractions, and if you pay close attention you will be able to detect the differences. For one they last for some 25-30 seconds are irregular and weak comparatively. They typically begin in the third trimester but can occur earlier and tend to last until delivery. Braxton Hicks contractions though annoying does serve the purpose of helping the mother prepare for labor. Having got used to the occasional contraction your body becomes prepared to face the real major contractions as the due date nears.
